Meet our Technicians

 
Julie McMahon - LVT, VTS (Dentistry)


In 2002 Julie received her Veterinary Technician license after completing the technician program at the Community College of Southern Nevada.  Her long history in the veterinary field began in 1987 and continues today. Julie started working at Community Animal Hospital in 2002 and is a very valuable part of the dental team. Besides working at the hospital, Julie enjoys being with her family, fishing, and camping.

Nancy Smith - LVT, VTS (Dentistry)

Nancy started her career in veterinary medicine in May of 1990. She received her license in veterinary technology in 2001 after completing the technician program offered through the Community College of Southern Nevada. She is licensed in both Nevada and California. As part of the first class of 2006, she successfully completed the credentialing process and examination required by the Academy of Veterinary Dental Technicians to attain the title of Veterinary Technician, Specialist in Dentistry. She is the technician representative on the board of the Nevada Veterinary Medical Association and is also on the board for the Veterinary Technology Program of Truckee Meadows Community College. Nancy’s interest in dentistry brought her to Community Animal Hospital where she will continue her career in the veterinary field. On her off time, Nancy is a voice for lost and abandoned animals. She has participated in animal rescue and adoption having found “forever” homes for many unwanted animals. She also loves to spend time with her own dogs, cats, birds and horses. Her family is most important to her, she has a daughter, son-in-law and 3 incredible grandchildren in N. California.

Heidi Lira - LVT

Heidi has worked at CAH since 2005, graduating from VASE and passing her Licensed Veterinary Technician exam in 2009. Previously she worked with the elderly in retirement homes. When Heidi is not at work she enjoys camping and hiking with her husband, Eric, and her dogs, Sadie and Sage. Heidi is very athletic and played softball for thirteen years. She even played a year of softball in college. She had been named MVP (Most Valuable Player) for two years.

Chuck - LVT
Since graduating from Churchill County High School, Chuck now attends the University of Nevada, Reno. He is majoring in Pre-Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science. Chuck has been working in his fields of interest, Large and Small Animal Medicine, for 7 years.

His professional goals are to become an equine surgeon and to open his own practice. If Chuck has any spare time he likes to hunt, fish, team rope, work out, or just be with family and friends. What he loves to do most is spend time with his girlfriend, Shannon.

Ben Shindelus, LVT

Ben was raised in Antioch , California. He attended Los Medanos College for two years. Ben has worked at CAH since 2005, graduating from VASE, and passing his Licensed Veterinary Technician exam in 2010. Previous work experience includes being a contractor's assistant for three years remodeling kitchens and bathrooms. He likes to spend his free time relaxing at home.  He also volunteers at Animal Ark, a local wildlife sanctuary nestled in the hills of Reno, Nevada . His true passion is to work with exotic (wild) animals.

Ray - LVT


Ray is currently enrolled at UNR pursuing a major in Animal Science and a minor in Vet Med and has worked as a veterinary assistant for seven years. He recently moved here from Las Vegas where he worked at Durango Animal Hospital.  He has also worked at animal hospitals in Temecula and Menifee, California , and one in Miami, Florida . He loves anything that has to do with the outdoors and any sports or activities that go along with it.
